Overview

    The Ministry is committed to developing a viable and competitive sustainable energy sector, through targeted and strategic renewable energy and energy conservation initiatives.
     
    The focus of the Ministry is to advance legislation, policy and programmes to give life to Government’s stated policy of transitioning Barbados to the world’s first 100% green energy and carbon neutral island-state, by 2030.
     
    As a result, the Ministry continues to deepen its collaborations with both internal and external stakeholders, including other Ministries and Government agencies, as well as the private sector, to ensure Barbados’ 2030 vision is realised.
     
     

    Activities

    The Ministry’s objective is to improve Barbados’ energy security and resilience, as well as reduce its dependence on imported fossil fuels, resulting in the retention of foreign exchange and the improvement of the country’s economic competitiveness. Key activities include:
     
    • Monitoring and coordinating the implementation of the Barbados National Energy Policy 2019-2030;
    • Promoting the use of renewable energy on the national grid;
    • Promoting the use of sustainable energy practices through various Pilot Projects and Studies;
    • Designing and installing Solar Photovoltaic systems in the Public Sector;
    • Conducting Energy Audits in the Public Sector;
    • Retrofitting of government buildings with energy efficient technologies;
    • Facilitating capacity building and institutional strengthening on sustainable energy matters within the public sector;
    • Implementing Public Education and Public Awareness activities.
