Talented secondary and tertiary students across the island will be given the opportunity to showcase their creative skills in the Barbados National Oil Company Ltd (BNOCL) 2011 calendar.
BNOCL has launched its sustainable energy-related poster competition under the theme Save Energy, Save Money. It is open to youth aged 11 to 19, and will run to October 22.
The competition is part of BNOCL’s bid to rebrand as an energy company instead of an oil company and will help to increase awareness and promote a greater appreciation for energy conservation and sustainable energy among that age group.

Energy Tip!

Many appliances continue to draw a small amount of power when they are switched off. These "phantom" loads occur in most appliances that use electricity, such as VCRs, televisions, stereos, computers, and kitchen appliances. In the average home, 75% of the electricity used to power home electronics is consumed while the products are turned off. This can be avoided by unplugging the appliance or using a power strip and using the switch on the power strip to cut all power to the appliance.
